The short version

Quick answer: Most candidates finish ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) in 2 to 4 years. Your time depends on how many of its 13 exams you sit and your weekly study hours. Exemptions cut it down: a completed B.Com skips 5 exams. ACCA’s 36 months of work experience can run alongside.

What sets your ACCA timeline

How long does the ACCA course take?

Most candidates finish in 2 to 4 years. ACCA has 13 exams, an ethics module and 36 months of work experience. The exams decide most of your timeline.

Two things move it most: how many exams you must sit, and how many hours you study each week. The work experience, called PER (Practical Experience Requirement), can run alongside your exams or job.

Our ACCA course details guide breaks the duration down by starting point, with fees and syllabus too. For real timelines by route, read how long ACCA takes.

How does this calculator estimate your ACCA duration?

It turns your weekly hours into a pace: papers cleared every 6 months. Then it divides your exams left by that pace.

Study hours a weekPapers every 6 months
Under 10About 1
10 to 15About 2
16 to 23About 3
24 or moreAbout 4

Plain takeaway: more weekly hours means more papers per 6 months, so a shorter path.

The FIA (Foundations in Accountancy) route adds about 3 months. The range runs from 3 months shorter to 9 months longer, to allow for retakes and gaps between sessions.

Illustrative: 8 exams at 10 hours a week is 2 papers every 6 months. That is 24 months, shown as 21 to 33 months. This is our rule of thumb, not an ACCA rule.

How do exemptions shorten ACCA?

Each exemption is one exam you do not sit. ACCA can exempt you from up to 9 of its 13 exams. Nobody is exempt from Strategic Professional.

  • Applied Knowledge: BT (Business and Technology), MA (Management Accounting), FA (Financial Accounting).
  • Applied Skills: LW (Corporate and Business Law), PM (Performance Management), TX (Taxation), FR (Financial Reporting), AA (Audit and Assurance), FM (Financial Management).
  • Strategic Professional: SBL (Strategic Business Leader), SBR (Strategic Business Reporting) and two Options exams.

A completed B.Com skips 5 exams, leaving 8. An MBA skips 3, and a qualified CA skips all 9. Check your exact course with our ACCA exemption calculator.

Where can you check ACCA’s official rules?

ACCA makes the final call on eligibility and exemptions after it checks your documents. Use these before you plan your exam windows.

FAQs

Important ACCA eligibility notes

Can I start ACCA after Class 12?

Many students can start directly after Class 12 if they meet ACCA's minimum entry requirements. If the marks or subjects do not fit, FIA/Foundation is usually the cleaner starting route.

Are exemptions guaranteed?

No. This tool estimates likely exemptions. ACCA confirms the final exemptions after checking your institution, degree, subjects, and documents.

Which paper should I start with?

Class 12 and non-commerce students usually begin with Applied Knowledge papers. B.Com and CA route students often start with FR, AA, FM, or a strategic paper depending on exemptions.
