Guide
How CFA scholarships really work
CFA Institute runs three scholarships for exam fees. Each one lowers the registration fee for a single exam. It also adds the Practice Pack (extra official practice questions) for awards made from 4 March 2026. You can hold only one at a time.
| Scholarship | Who it’s for | Fee becomes |
|---|---|---|
| Access | People who may not be able to afford the fee | USD 400 |
| Student | Students at a University Affiliation Program school | USD 600 |
| Professor | Full-time faculty, or department heads who teach | USD 600 |
Plain takeaway: Access is the cheapest, but it is for real financial need.
Older blog posts mention Women’s or Regulator scholarships. CFA Institute’s scholarships page lists only these three for individual applicants. Regulator and partner awards come only through sponsor organisations. Full details: our CFA scholarship guide.
Anyone who meets the normal CFA entry rules and may not be able to afford the fee. CFA Institute’s rules set no minimum or maximum income or assets. Financial need is the key test, and CFA Institute alone decides.

Each exam window has its own short Access application window, about three weeks long. Decisions come by email about four weeks after it closes. You must apply in the window for the exam you plan to sit.
| Exam window | Apply | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| February 2027 | 5–25 May 2026 | 19 Jun 2026 |
| May 2027 | 12 Aug – 1 Sep 2026 | 25 Sep 2026 |
| August 2027 | 3–23 Nov 2026 | 18 Dec 2026 |
| November 2027 | 9 Feb – 2 Mar 2027 | 26 Mar 2027 |
Plain takeaway: apply about nine months before your exam, and wait for the decision before you register.
Registering while your application is pending voids it. CFA Institute treats it as proof you can pay. Exam dates: CFA exam dates.
It depends on the price you would otherwise pay. Without an award, Level 1 costs USD 1,140 early or USD 1,490 standard. With Access you pay USD 400 instead. That is like a train ticket at a third of the fare, same seat.
| Level 1 fee | USD | ≈ ₹ (illustrative) |
|---|---|---|
| No award, early price | 1,140 | ₹1,08,237 |
| No award, standard price | 1,490 | ₹1,41,468 |
| Student or Professor | 600 | ₹56,967 |
| Access | 400 | ₹37,978 |
Plain takeaway: Access saves about ₹70,000 on one Level 1 exam versus the early price, before GST.
₹ at the ECB reference rate, crossed via EUR, of ₹94.9451 per US dollar on 23 Oct 2026, before GST. The award does not cover tax. Level 3 costs USD 100 more without an award.
Both run all year, not in short windows. Students apply from 1 September to 15 July, and the affiliated university picks who wins. Professors apply from 1 September to 31 July, and CFA Institute decides. Each award is valid for one of four exam cycles, depending on your level. Your award email names it. Not selected for a Student Scholarship? CFA Institute’s Student FAQ says you still get the early price. This holds even after the early deadline, while registration is open.
CFA Institute’s rules (updated April 2026) punish unused awards. Take one only if you will sit the exam. These four things stop future scholarships for good, so plan before you apply.
False information breaks CFA Institute’s Code of Ethics and can lead to a CFA Institute investigation. With an award, only an emergency deferral is possible, if you meet CFA Institute’s criteria.
It checks your answers against CFA Institute’s published rules for each scholarship. Then it picks the cheapest one you could still use for your exam window. Dates come from CFA Institute’s scholarship and fees pages, checked October 2026.
“Fits” means your answers match the rules. It is not a promise: CFA Institute, or your university, makes the final call. ₹ figures use the ECB reference rate, crossed via EUR, plus an assumed 18% GST. The ECB (European Central Bank) publishes daily euro reference rates; crossed via EUR means we convert through the euro to get the rupee rate.
